Trinity Cowl Crochet Pattern

Trinity Cowl by Helen McLean

If you follow me on Instagram you will have probably seen the new cowl design that I have been working on.

You may already be familiar with the trinity stitch. It creates a relatively dense fabric with no holes - perfect for makes such as dishcloths.

Whilst it is a beautiful stitch, the finished fabric was not what I was after, hence I started playing around with the same basic trinity stitch structure but trying different ways to create a more flowing and loose structure. And this is when I started playing with a modified trinity stitch.

I have created many sample squares for the fabulous Papatya Batik yarn using this stitch and I immediately fell in love with how it looks. I just had to put a design together that utilised this gorgeous stitch. And here it is, my Trinity Cowl.

Notes:

The first leg of each dc3tog will always be in the same stitch space as the last leg of the previous stitch.

Terminology (US Terms):

  • dc3tog - double crochet three together

  • ch - chain

  • ch-sp - chain space

  • st(s) - stitch or stitches

  • sk - skip

  • slst - slip stitch

Materials:

I used just 1 ball of Papatya Batik DK and a 4mm hook.

I have also made this cowl using Yarmsiths Lagoon DK and it works perfectly as well.

Here are just some of the gorgeous yarns and kits available in the shop now!

Instructions:

Begin with ch50.

Row 1: sk the first 4 ch, dc3tog over 5th, 6th and 7th ch from the hook, ch 1, (the next st is starting in the same ch as the last leg of your previous st and across your next 2 ch) dc3tog across the 7th, 8th and 9th ch, ch1, *(again the next st is starting in the same ch as the last leg of your previous st and across the next 2 ch) dc3tog, ch1,* repeat * to * to the last ch, dc into the last ch, ch4, turn

Row 2: starting in the first ch-sp, dc3tog across the ch-sp, top of the dc3tog, the next ch-sp, ch1, *(the next st is starting in the same ch-sp as the last leg of your previous st) dc3tog, ch1*, repeat * to * to last st, dc in the last st, ch4, turn

Rows 3 - 57: Repeat Row 2

The following row is your joining row, here we join the ends of the cowl as you go to save any sewing!

Row 58: sl st into the 3rd ch on the other end of the cowl to connect the two corresponding ends, *dc3tog, ch1, slst into the ch-st to connect the two corresponding ends* (note: you will always slst into a ch-st that has the first and last leg of two dc3tog stitches on the corresponding end), repeat * to * to the last st, sl st into the last stitch on the corresponding end of the cowl, dc into the last stitch

Fasten off and weave in your two ends.

I am putting together a crochet chart and pdf pattern with photos and I will update here as soon as it is available. In the meantime, happy crocheting!
